The performance hit nobody checks for

A 2011 study in the British Journal of Nutrition put young women through a series of cognitive tests at mild dehydration (1.36 percent body weight loss) induced by exercise and mild heat. Why plain water is not always enough

Water moves into cells through osmotic pressure driven primarily by sodium. Without adequate sodium at the cellular level, water consumed orally passes through the kidneys as urine rather than being retained in tissues and blood. This is why athletes who drink large volumes of plain water during endurance events can develop hyponatremia (dangerously low blood sodium) while still being functionally dehydrated at the cellular level.
