The device noticed. Your resting heart rate is up. Deep sleep is down. HRV is running lower than it was three months ago. You have a number, a color, and a vague instruction to “improve your sleep environment.”

That is where most wearable journeys end. Not because the data is useless, but because no one has built the bridge from consumer-tracker output to clinical interpretation. Primary care physicians are not trained on Oura data. Sleep medicine specialists often dismiss it. And the app offers correlation without causation and graphs without next steps.

The data is real. The gap is the interpreter.

What the metrics actually measure

Deep sleep percentage correlates with slow-wave sleep (SWS), the stage during which growth hormone is released, cellular repair occurs, and metabolic waste is cleared from the brain via the glymphatic system. Healthy adults should spend 13 to 23 percent of their total sleep time in deep sleep. A consistent reading below 10 percent is worth investigating, regardless of what your overall score looks like.

Heart rate variability (HRV) reflects the balance between your sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. High HRV means your body is recovering well and handling stress efficiently. Low HRV means the opposite. The number that matters is your personal baseline trend, not a comparison to population averages. A drop of more than 15 percent sustained over two weeks warrants attention.

What most people do with wearable data (and why it does not help)

Check the score in the morning. Feel good or bad about it. Adjust bedtime by 15 minutes. Repeat. Most wearable users have been stuck in this loop for years without meaningfully improving the underlying metrics that drive their scores.
