The zone most people skip
Most recreational exercisers train in what physiologists call the “moderate-hard” or “black hole” zone: too easy to produce meaningful high-intensity adaptations, too hard to stay in long enough for the fat oxidation and mitochondrial biogenesis benefits of true Zone 2. The person on the elliptical at a pace where conversation requires effort but is still barely possible is in this zone. It feels like exercise. It does not produce the aerobic base that Zone 2 develops.
True Zone 2 feels embarrassingly easy for the first several weeks if someone has been training in the black hole zone. The pace is slow enough to hold a full normal conversation without breathing rhythm interrupting sentences. Most experienced recreational exercisers slow down 20 to 30 percent when they first actually implement Zone 2 correctly. The pacing feels wrong. The adaptations it produces are not.

What Zone 2 produces that other zones do not
Mitochondrial biogenesis. Zone 2 maximally stimulates PGC-1alpha, the master regulator of mitochondrial biogenesis. More mitochondria per muscle fiber means more aerobic capacity, better fat oxidation efficiency, and reduced metabolic byproduct accumulation (lactate, reactive oxygen species) during exercise. The mitochondrial density of elite endurance athletes is two to three times that of sedentary adults, and this density is built almost entirely through Zone 2 volume rather than high-intensity work.
Fat oxidation efficiency. Zone 2 is the intensity at which fat oxidation rate is highest in absolute terms. Above Zone 2, carbohydrate becomes the dominant fuel source and fat oxidation declines. Someone who wants to improve their metabolic flexibility (the ability to efficiently use fat as a fuel between meals and during exercise) trains this capacity specifically in Zone 2.
Cardiac adaptations. Zone 2 volumes over months and years produce the cardiac structural adaptations of endurance training: increased stroke volume, reduced resting heart rate, improved heart rate variability, and cardiac chamber remodeling that together produce the cardiovascular reserve that predicts longevity in prospective studies.

Plan of action
- On the next workout, wear a heart rate monitor and deliberately stay in Zone 2 for the entire session. Note what pace this requires. It will feel slower than normal. That is correct.

As fitness improves, walking speed required to stay in Zone 2 increases, and eventually walking becomes Zone 1 or below. At that point, jogging, cycling, or increasing incline is needed to maintain Zone 2 intensity. The modality does not matter; the heart rate zone does.
